How long does it take to become a cosmetologist in Kansas?
Short answer: as little as 11 months, full-time. Here’s where that number comes from — and what can move it.
The math behind 11 months
Kansas requires 1,500 clock hours for a cosmetology license. At Hays Academy the program runs full-time, Tuesday through Saturday:
- 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday
- 11:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. Thursday
- 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. on designated Saturdays
Stack those weeks up and 1,500 hours lands in roughly eleven months. The Kansas Board of Cosmetology’s own guidance says full-time programs typically finish in about 9–12 months — 11 is the honest middle for a schedule like this one.
You don’t wait until the end to start licensing
Kansas lets you take the written theory exam at 1,000 hours — about two-thirds of the way through — and the practical exam around 1,420 hours. Both are administered through Ergometrics ($75 each, 75% to pass). Most students walk across the graduation line with the written exam already done, which shortens the gap between “graduated” and “earning.”
What can stretch the timeline
Three things, mostly:
- Attendance. Hours only count when you’re there — graduation requires a 75% cumulative GPA in attendance as well as theory and practical.
- Start dates. Programs start four times a year (February, May, August, October) — the clock starts when your cohort does, so the “fastest” path is often just the nearest start date.
- Part-time hopes. There’s no evening or part-time track here — the program is full-time by design. If you need part-time, the timeline is a different conversation at a different school.
Compare that to the alternatives
Eleven months is fast for a career credential. A four-year degree takes — four years. Even the nail technology license next door runs 3 months for its 350 hours.
