How to become a nail tech in Kansas
Nail technology is the fastest licensed path in the beauty industry: in Kansas it’s 350 hours, about three months, and you hold your own state license. Not a mini-cosmetology license: a real, separate credential.
1. Check the boxes
Same entry requirements as cosmetology: at least 16 years old, with a high school diploma, G.E.D., or registered homeschool proof.
2. Enroll in a KBOC-licensed program
The Kansas Board of Cosmetology licenses nail technology programs at 350 hours. Hays Academy runs the program at both campuses, Hays and Salina, with starts four times a year (February, May, August, November). A $100 registration payment with your registration contract secures the seat.
3. Train the 350 hours
Three months of continuous, focused training: acrylic nails, natural nail care, spa manicures and pedicures, nail art, plus the communication and business skills that turn a license into a book of regulars. Training runs on the full-time academy schedule. All services are performed by supervised students.
4. Pass the state exams
Kansas licensure means a written and a practical exam through Ergometrics ($75 each, 75% to pass). In the 2024 NACCAS annual report, 100% of Hays Academy graduates passed their licensure exams, nail technology included.
5. Pick your path
Licensed nail techs work in salons and spas, build independent books, or open their own studios. Nail art alone has become a genuine career lane, the small canvas is the point.
The numbers, published
The whole program is $4,595, $100 registration, $900 books/kit/ equipment, $3,595 tuition. That’s the entire published price. Compare that to what three months of most educations cost, then look at the cosmetology’s published numbers if you’re deciding between the two. And if you fall in love with the rest of the craft later, the cosmetology program is right down the hall.
